Du har säkert hört Ernst Rolfs gamla revykuplett Bättre och bättre dag för dag? I den titeln döljer sig upprinnelsen till upptäckten av det undermedvetna. Den franske psykologen Emile Coué uppnådde resultat på sin klinik i Schweiz i slutet av 1800-talet, som vida översteg alla andras vid den tiden. Hans teknik var så enkel att det dröjde länge innan den blev accepterad. Och vetenskapen hann inte ikapp förrän i slutet av 1900-talet. Han lärde helt enkelt varje patient att upprepa: “Varje dag och på alla sätt blir jag bättre och bättre”. Lika enkelt som det låter, lika framgångsrikt fick han patienter med varierande sjukdomstillstånd att snabbt återhämta sig.

Emile Coués succé ledde till fortsatt arbete av tysken Johannes Schultz. Han var intresserad av att hitta nya vägar för att hjälpa människor att övervinna depressioner, neuroser, ångest och andra mentala tillstånd som hindrade känslan av lycka. Han upptäckte att ju mer avslappnad man var när man upprepade frasen “varje dag och på alla sätt blir jag bättre och bättre”, ju fortare kom tillfriskningen.

Schultz utvecklade den process som brukar kallas autogenic self conditioning. Han visade att om man först använder en systematisk process för att få patienten avslappnad och därefter att visualisera positiva affirmationer, då verkade den nya informationen gå direkt till det undermedvetna. Snabba och märkbara förbättringar märktes både på den fysiska och den mentala hälsan. Med åren utvecklades denna träning i Europa och används i en rad olika sammanhang, från mentala sjukdomstillstånd till säljträning, att tala obehindrat inför publik och till att optimera atletisk träning.
Det sägs att det forna Östtyskland var det land som utvecklade denna teknik upp till högsta nivå. Tekniken utvecklades till den grad att den behandlades som en statshemlighet. Östtyskarna vann mer medaljer i olympiska spelen per capita än något annat land.
