I människans begynnelse fanns inte språket. Vi kan ha haft musik innan vi hade något ord för den, utropar Daniel Levitin i sin nya bok “The World in Six Songs”. Levitin är “associate professor” på McGill University i Montreal och en av världens ledande experter på kognitiv musikperception.

Han förklarar mera i detalj varför vi ägnar så stor del av vår tid åt musik. Paradigmskiftet inom musikforskningen de senaste 5-6 åren innebär att man nu även börjat titta på den känslomässiga upplevelsen. Det är vår hjärnas uråldriga belöningssystem som belönar oss med må-bra-substansen dopamin när vi gillar ett stycke musik. En substans som också utsöndras av t.ex. orgasm och kakao.

Om du lyssnar på ett musikstycke kommer din hjärna att hela tiden försöka tolka vad som ska komma härnäst. Även om vi inte är medvetna om det, har den en “statistisk karta” över de kommande mest sannolika och minst sannolika möjligheterna för musikens fortsatta riktning. Om musiken har rätt proportioner av dessa möjligheter kommer du att bli rikligt belönad med “happy juice”, som Levitin uttrycker det. Låt säga att du gillar musiken på Kasa-Lords senaste CD. Då kommer ditt belöningssystem i hjärnan att utsöndra dopamin. Om musiken däremot hela tiden går den mest sannolika vägen, kommer du att tröttna på den och om den går den minst sannolika vägen kommer den att irritera dig. Inget dopamin. Bra musik har alltid de rätta proportionerna, vilket ju också givetvis varierar från person till person.

För dig som sjunger i kör har Levitin glädjande nyheter. När vi sjunger tillsammans utsöndras substansen oxytocin, som är ett “tillitshormon”. (”Involved in establishing bonds of trust between people”). Här finns givetvis inget exakt angivet personantal, men man kan kanske anta att belöningen kommer även i ett mindre band, bestående av 4-5 personer.

Vem kan säga nej till all denna kemiska glädje i hjärnan? Musik får dig att må bra! Välj den med omsorg.
